Original improvement meme by *asteroidz

NEW on the right, OLD on the left.

Look how much improvement I made in just a few months! Admittedly, I used a reference for the one on the right (the new one) while drew the other from memory, but still. I paid a lot more attention to details - how his features are shaped, his lips (it's so hard to make his lips full like they really are without making them feminine), his hair...

What I mean by "improved" is in my likeness of him. If you look at a screenshot of him, such as this one and this one, he has slightly Native American features, a broad face, strong jaw, straight nose... things I didn't match so well in the old picture. The one on the right actually does look like him.

The one on the left looked too much like a... well, a skeleton to me. The whole thing just makes me cringe to look at. I much prefer the style on the right AND how it actually looks like him rather than... I don't even know. The more I look at the left side, the more I think he doesn't even look like Caius. At all.

Original images: Caius Ballad [COMPLETE] and Caius -shaded-. Comments/critiques before 12-10-12 refer to Caius -unshaded-, not the current work on the right.

Reference for right image: Blau by =TwiggXstock

Likeness - I can see Caius in both images, one very important aspect of doing portraits of people/characters is that getting the likeness is PARAMOUNT,there's very small details like specific lines and shading that would help in making Caius look like Caius 100% ,there's always very small fine details that make a person a person, the only problem I find with both pictures is that they show different angles of Caius' face so comparing them to each other for improvement proves to be difficult

Details- I think you could improve on the level of depth to details,or decide a hierarchy between the elements in your portrait,by the way your portrait is drawn I'm naturally drawn to the face and the eyes in particular but by adding depth you'll make that very apparent and more rounded

Technique/shading-it never quite seems like a person has a whole lot of shading and shadows on their face but if you took Caius' shots and turned them gray you would be able to notice all these ranges and variants there, give that a try,it'll help you produce a much richer deeper set of grading. As far as your technique,I like some of your lines, but I would say try out more line styles and forms of shading, like cross hatching and dotting to bring out different textures, characters are immersed in lots of details

Overall picture- very nice form, could use some extra shading and fine detailing

I like the before. I always thought that Caius had more of feminine features. I know his voice makes him seem like he is a GUY, but he has a feminine-ish face. His jawline is pretty strong, but he has a pretty angular and thin face. His eyes aren't as wide as in top to bottom as us, so they DO tend to look 'squinty' I guess you could say. The hair looks GREAT though. I DO think that it isn't as full as how you did it in the new version though. They are both good, you improved right?

I think you should study human anatomy (skull, facial muscles) and do a lot more practice drawings from real life -even if you're only going to draw stilized images in the end. This will help you with everything; From shading the hair to placing the facial features to the lines on the neck (which look kinda random right now). But in itself it's good improvement for only a few months :)

Wow, you did improve your abilities a lot indeed! Both face and hair are so much more accurate and realistic than before, I'm impressed. Also perspective and the amount of details is just stunning compared to the original - you did learn a lot when it comes to anatomy! Just imagine how amazing you'll be in a year or so! To come to the critique part: You might want to use a little more dramatic shading to create a bit more depth in your sketch. Just look at different styles and pick the one you prefer - it'd truly make your character stand out nicely. Just give it a try and experiment.

Thank you! :aww: I was honestly afraid of shading because I tend to overdo it or mess up somehow, but I still want to try shading it. Just need to have some confidence in my skill, I guess. And tools.

You're welcome! :) Oh, I know the feeling, but hey, practice makes perfect and you'll find your ideal style of shading very soon, I'm sure. Yeah, get yourself some nice pencils and start - I personally only use pretty cheap things, because I can't afford any luxury as a student. So don't worry!

Is it bad I like the before better?

Let me explain myself. In the original, the proportions seem much more even, and I feel as if the jawline is smoother and more masculine. The 'after' jawline seems a bit more rounded, which makes his face look a bit uneven.
Also, I think the features are much more evenly spaced, and the hair is sized better.

Honestly, I don't think there's any point in fixing something that isn't broken. I mean, there's always room for improvement, but I feel like you fixed things that didn't need fixed.

They are both very good, don't get me wrong! The details in both are great! :D

His jawline is more rounded in the 'after' because that's how his face is actually structured. My goal here was to go for likeness, which to me is improvement. I can still see things that need to be fixed, but I consider it an improvement and I feel a lot better about it than I do the old one. But thank you for the feedback. :)
